IFTA Registration Guide for New Motor Carriers

Everything new motor carriers need to know about IFTA — the International Fuel Tax Agreement. How to register in Alabama, quarterly filing, fuel tax calculations, record-keeping requirements, and penalties for non-compliance.

return ( What Is IFTA? The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is a cooperative agreement between the 48 contiguous U.S.

states and 10 Canadian provinces.

It simplifies the reporting and payment of fuel taxes for motor carriers that operate in multiple jurisdictions.

Without IFTA, a trucker who drives through six states on a single trip would need a separate fuel tax permit for each state and would need to file fuel tax returns with each state individually.

IFTA eliminates that administrative nightmare.

You register in your base state (called your "base jurisdiction"), file one quarterly return with that state, and your base state handles distributing the fuel tax money to every other state where you drove.

Think of IFTA as a fuel tax clearinghouse.

Each state has its own fuel tax rate.

You pay fuel tax at the pump wherever you buy fuel, but you owe fuel tax to every state based on the miles you drive there — not just where you buy fuel.

IFTA reconciles the difference quarterly.

Who Needs IFTA? You need IFTA registration if you operate a qualified motor vehicle in two or more IFTA member jurisdictions.

A qualified motor vehicle is defined as: A motor vehicle with two axles and a gross vehicle weight or registered gross vehicle weight exceeding 26,000 lbs , or A motor vehicle with three or more axles regardless of weight , or A motor vehicle used in combination (tractor-trailer) when the combined weight exceeds 26,000 lbs.

If you're an owner-operator pulling a semi-trailer across state lines, you need IFTA.

If you only operate within one state (intrastate only), you do not need IFTA — but you still need to comply with that state's fuel tax requirements.

Operating interstate without valid IFTA credentials is a violation that can result in fines at weigh stations and roadside inspections.

Each state without an IFTA permit can require you to purchase a temporary trip permit on the spot — typically $30-$75 per state.

This adds up fast and creates delays.

Get IFTA before you cross state lines.
